"Evening on the Tauber" | Watercolour | 29 x 13” (42 x 26”framed) | $3600.00
While travelling the "Romantic Road" in Germany, we spent a few days in the walled medieval town of Rothenberg ob der Tauber. The red tile roofs, stout towers, and half timbered houses, some dating to 950 a.d. are beautifully preserved, and the view from the walls over the Bavarian landscape is an idyllic blend of mature forest and steep pitched roofs. The reward for walking the perimeter of the wall was a spectacular red and gold sunset. The quintessential medieval village settled down into the night, as it has for a millenium.
Watercolour| 29 x 17" ( 43 x 31" Framed) | $4600
Accepted into the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour 91st Annual Open Water Exhibition,
October 20 - November 18, 2016 John B. Aird Gallery, Toronto Ontario
St. Andrews church (built in 1665, rebuilt in 1793, burnt down and rebuilt in 1860) is at the end of Church Lane in Dublin, a lovely gothic surprise when rounding a corner from streets filled with a variety of Neo-Classical, Edwardian and modern buildings. On the right is the former National Irish Bank (1864) with elegant arches echoing the enormous gothic church window looming in the background, graceful ironwork gives relief to the solidity of the stone façades. The giant flagstones don’t exist on this street but they do nearby, nor was it raining but our experience in Ireland was 90% rain and wet surfaces give dimension, depth and a place for light to reflect. The stained glass window was completely darkbut a lit window adds life light and depth to the background. This painting is very much a reflection of perception and memory over reality, of prowling the streets of Temple Bar at night, marvelling at the span of architectural styles and complicated history.
