Since studying art history and architecture at the UofA eons ago, I was obsessed with the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul - the largest building in the world when it was built in 537 AD, and it remained the world's largest cathedral for almost 1000 years. Fortunate enough (and completely dumbstruck) to find myself standing in it's immense and ancient presence, I was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and elegance of this architectural marvel. For this painting I chose to focus on one small and quiet corner of the mezzanine level, rich with detail, colour, lovely curves and flooded with light.
