The Rector's Palace in Dubrovnik summed up the city for me; a composite of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, and an enduring symbol of strength in the face of adversity. The palace itself endured a fire, gun powder explosion, earthquake, and recently the siege of Dubrovnik in 1991-92. Having visited just 10 years after the end of the break up of Yugoslavia, the shadow of conflict was still present but the city was once again peaceful and prosperous. The cool and quiet interior belies the hot Dalmatian sun and stormy history of the city. Gleaming Brač stone floors reflect light and image, the luxurious claret curtains (in real life they are green) soften the lines and texture of the solid stone interior.
