The imposing Arch of Titus (82 A.D., 50 feet tall, and the model for future arches including the Arc de Triomphe in Paris) depicts various honours, spoils of war, battles and restorations. I'll never get over the intricate beauty, narrative and permanence that can be created with stone. Through the arch one can see ruins of the forum baking in the heat with relief provided by the tall umbrella pines gracing Capitoline Hill. Its sheer age, size and complicated history is astounding, and the act of painting it let me process it in a very small way.
