The first major trip that inspired my architectural paintings was to New Orleans, and my 1997 exhibition was largely based on its historic architecture and gardens. This year we returned to the 300 year old city, (with the same friends as in 1997) and it seemed fitting somehow to celebrate my 25th annual exhibition with a painting that reflects this influence. This Creole mansion on St. Louis street was built in 1831, and with its 16 ft. ceilings is a cool refuge from the humid sultry and bustling French Quarter. The antique furniture is original to the house, the view outside is inspired by the lush foliage and gracious verandas of the garden district, and I introduced the Venetian mask as a symbol of Mardi Gras, the French roots of the city, and as one of my favourite still life subjects.
