"The Fairmont Banff Springs has long been a favourite subject matter of mine with its alluring presence and unparalleled mountain setting. I am interested in the way its multiple spires seem to grow out of the mountains themselves, and how it's lines and composition parallel the architectural qualities of its mighty neighbour Mt. Rundle. My use of charcoal and black gouache on white paper simplifies a complicated scene, and represents winter etched black and white world. The soft clouds give the dark brooding architecture its own space, nestled into the trees and rock and dusted with brilliant snow. The incorporation of elegant branches frames the peaks of the castle, balances the heavier compositional elements and adds an air of mystery and dimension."
