Mount Robson, Spiral Road of Art

Sneak Peak: "Mount Robson, Spiral Road of Art"
by Jane Lytton Gooch, published by Rocky Mountain Books, will hit book shelves this spring.

A Lawren Harris painting graces the front cover, and I am very pleased that my painting "Mt. Robson, North Face" gets the back cover, and will also appear in the book along with another watercolour ("Snowbird Pass") and a charcoal ("Berg Lake.") The book will be available this spring, Date TBA.

From The RMB website: "Mount Robson: Spiral Road of Art celebrates the centennial of Mount Robson Provincial Park with over a century of remarkable landscape paintings inspired by the Robson region in the Canadian Rockies. This volume includes an extensive Introduction with historical and cultural background to the 50 colour plates, all documented and described, illustrating artists' works in a variety of styles and media from 1907-2012. Early artists include A.P. Coleman, the first explorer, and Group of Seven members A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris. In addition, the works of 17 contemporary artists show that the Mount Robson area continues to stimulate landscape art up to the present. Only 10 of the images have been published before." Second Charcoal on its way to Banff

The second of two new charcoals will arrive at Canada House Gallery in Banff today. The subject of this drawing, The "Grapes Wine Bar" at the Banff Springs Hotel is many people's favourite spot for a glass of something lovely.  Originally opened as a writing room in 1926, its captivating ambience invites one to sit and read, write, or simply contemplate the beauty of the wild Rocky Mountains.  The dark interior includes Elizabethan paneling, grape and vine crown mouldings and plank floors, offering an elegant and warm vantage point from which to enjoy the superb view towards the Bow valley. It is a room I have painted and drawn many times over the years, as it has so many different moods, changes of light, strong compositional elements, and is certainly one of my favourite places.

New Landscape on its way to Banff

I have recently finished one of two new charcoals for Canada House Gallery in Banff, just in time for Christmas.  Entitled "Black and Whyte"  (after the Mt. Whyte, the prominent peak on the right,) I wanted to convey the strange way light can bounce around in the winter.  The shadows drift across fresh snow, creating movement and shape while contrasting with the bright sunlight on the mountains.  The snow seems almost to be lit from within, as it so often can on a crisp winter's day.  I almost titled it "Many States of Water" (not entirely fetching) as there is the ancient ice of Victoria glacier, the new ice of the Lake Louise, the fresh running water of Louise Creek, frost on the trees, and of course snow.  Oh yes, and clouds.   There was probably ice fog and crystals too, as it was -28 celcius the when I was standing in this spot!

Stay tuned for the next new charcoal...The Banff Springs.

"Winner's Circle" Feature: Winter's Keep

Excerpt posted on July 3, 2012 on the "Winner's Circle" of the Artist's Network website:  "Our Strokes of Genius art competition has produced some terrific winners, including Jennifer Annesley’s Winter’s Keep, featured in Strokes of Genius 3: Fresh Perspectives.

Best of Drawing, Winter's Keep by Jennifer Annesley

Charcoal and gouache on white paper  |  15″ x 43″ (38cm x 109cm)

Here’s what Jennifer Annesley says about her artwork:
This historic railroad hotel in the Canadian Rockies has long captured my imagination with its balance of elegance and power. The multiple spires seem to spring from the mountains themselves, especially in winter’s etched black-and-white world. I photographed an unusual perspective of the complicated architecture as well as some snow-laden trees nearby in the last moments of afternoon sun. I emphasized the contrast between dark brooding stone and brilliant snow, keeping the highlights untouched to maximize the illusion of light.

Jennifer Annesley’s piece Winter’s Keep appeared in Strokes of Genius 3: Fresh Perspectives, published by North Light Books in 2011. Enter the competition here for your chance to appear in Strokes 5 & win other prizes!

Artist's Reception, April 21, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

"A first joint show for 2 Western Canadian artists, Canada House Gallery is proud to present the striking work of Jennifer Annesley and Dieter Schlatter. Annesley's incredible monochromatic vistas are created with charcoal and gouache. She also works in watercolour, and achieves international recognition for her talents. Schlatter's fascination with black and white film photography is juxtaposed with an edgy, contemporary, almost graffiti form of painting. The contrasts in the two artists' landscapes are obvious, yet unexpectedly, their work is beautifully compatible."

"Congratulations to the 106 artists selected for the latest North Light Books’ Best of Watercolor competition, Splash 14: Light and Color!

On behalf of Rachel Wolf and the staff of North Light Books, I’d like to thank all of the participants in this year’s Splash contest. We received more than 1500 gorgeous entries, and it was a challenging task to narrow the field from so many worthy submissions. Thank you for sharing your work with us." (Posted on March 30, 2012 by Sarah Laichas, Editor)
