International Artist Magazine

The watercolour "Last Call" (7 x 10.5", private collection, 2012) won a full page in the June/July 2014 Issue #97 of International Artist Magazine, through their annual Still Life Competition.

I painted this as a sort of tribute to the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. The tickets under the scotch glass are replicas of the boarding passes, and the time on the antique pocket watch is set to about 1.5 hours before the Titanic struck the ice berg. Last call, indeed.

"Parallels" Exhibition at Canada House Gallery

It is an honour to participate in a second exhibition with artist Dieter Schlatter at Canada House this spring, comprised of approximately 15 new paintings and drawings of iconic scenes of Banff National Park, and some more remote landscapes. Deiter's work will also feature iconic mountain scenes; it will be an interesting and dynamic contrast between our two styles with similar subjects.

"A second joint show for 2 Western Canadian artists, Canada House Gallery is proud to present the striking work of Jennifer Annesley and Dieter Schlatter. Annesley's incredible monochromatic vistas are created with charcoal and gouache. She also works in watercolour, and achieves international recognition for her talents. Schlatter's fascination with black and white film photography is juxtaposed with an edgy contemporary painting technique. The contrasts in the two artists' landscapes are obvious, yet unexpectedly their work is beautifully compatible." For more information, visit Canada House Gallery

Artists reception Saturday, April 12, 1-3 pm

Exhibition runs until April 23

The Grand Hotels

As I prepare to start a painting of the Banff Springs Hotel for my spring show at Canada House Gallery in Banff, I realized that since 1995, I have painted the Grand Railroad Hotels 40 times!  In light of this landmark,  this suite of paintings can now be viewed in it's entirety. There is a lovely poignancy to this, as the Banff Springs Hotel is 125 years old this year.  The majority of the paintings are of the Banff Springs, but the Hotel Macdonald, Royal York, Fairmont San Francisco, Jasper Park Lodge, Hotel Vancouver, The Palliser, and Chateau Lake Louise are also represented.

Countdown to the 20th Anniversary Exhibition, "20/20"

The 20th Anniversary Exhibition is coming soon!  The final strokes of paint are going on all 30 paintings, and the framing marathon will start on Friday. There are a few hundred details to settle between now and next Thursday, Nov. 7. We are looking forward to presenting the new work to you at the exhibition! (Don't forget to RSVP by Monday Nov. 4.)

Preview Image #9 | "Central Park" | 19 x 29" (22 x 42" framed)

When visiting New York City this summer, some blustery weather made for some interesting dashes through the rain with inverted umbrellas. The upside is, the Central Park is even more alluring in the rain, with enormous trees and cobblestones glittering in the light of a classic Central Park lamp post, with the hint of high rises beyond. The welcoming benches, unusually vacant because of the rain, make a graceful curved element against the vertical trees and posts. The benches emanate loneliness at the same time as the relief of aloneness in a bustling metropolis.
I've used elements from other parks and squares in NYC as well as Central Park to come up with a somewhat idealized vision of the park and my experience of it.

Preview #8 | "Glass" | Watercolor | 10.5 x 7"

These antique pearl Opera glasses are a favourite object of mine as subject matter and as a useful item. Elegant and evocative of a past era, their convex glass creates interesting reflections/refractions on the sheet music. The music is Valtz #7, Opus 64, #2, from a 1934 book of Chopin Valses that belonged to my Grandmother. The pages are tattered and yellow and perfect for painting, and often appear in my still life work.

Preview Image #7 | "Iron Shadows" | Acrylic on Board | 12 x 24"

The city of Nice is an alluring mix of architecture on the sparkling French Riviera, from Medieval and Baroque to Belle Epoque, in contrast with sleek yacht culture and palm trees. But what really caught my attention were the elaborate and intimate iron balconies festooned with lush flowers against stucco walls washed in the mediterranean sunshine, casting ornate and lively shadows.

"Antebellum" | 19 x 29" (30 x 40 Framed) | Watercolour

The Garden district in New Orleans is a darkly beautiful and mysterious place, wearing its rich and complicated history like an ornate and tattered gown. The giant roots of the live oaks heave the sidewalks beside the Antebellum mansions, as miles of cast iron fencing create hypnotic patterns. The humid air is like silk on the skin, and is almost visible in the early evening light.

This painting has been juried into the CSPWC's 88th Annual Open Water Exhibition to be held at the Leighton Arts Center, Calgary, Sept. 7 to Oct.20. Not to fret though, the painting will be back in time for the 20th Annual Exhibition in Edmonton!
