"Travelling Light"

With the arrival of spring comes new beginnings, new growth and fresh opportunities. My debut exhibition for White Rock Gallery entitled "Travelling Light" opened on May 2nd in White Rock, B.C. Visit the gallery website for more information or to acquire a painting.

“City in the Rain” | Watercolour | 20 x 30” with archival framing

The exhibition explores how light travels across and through wild and man-made landscapes. The title also a references the role of travel in my work. Whether on foot, ski, by canoe or otherwise, I travel to find my subject matter and am always on the lookout for the transformative effects of light, a central theme in all of my paintings. Furthermore, the title refers to the smaller (lighter) size of the exhibition. I am somewhat notorious for never packing light when travelling, but can one always hold out hope.

Me, pointing out the obvious. Ultra-light backpacking is not in my vocabulary at this point. No good light this day, but there is always tomorrow.

Spring is also the time when back-country plans crystallize, when the abstract becomes concrete. We plan our back-country trips well in advance, sometimes a year or more out but now is the time we start preparations - fixing or replacing gear, meal planning, travel arrangements to and from trail heads and so on. We are lucky to have secured a spot at Mt. Assinboine campsite for July, part of a 6 night backpack trip. I have seen “the Boine” only from near Citadel Pass via ski, (images below) so I’m looking forward to getting a closer look in summertime on foot.

Whether you are nose down in your gardens or squeezing in another ski trip, whether you are creating art, creating community, or just hanging out wondering what to do, enjoy the longer days and this month of May. Take care of each other.
